Esme was in the living room. She had tidied up abit and was now lounging on the couch flipping through the channels. She could not find anything she liked even on the pay-per-view. In the blink of an eye she had gone upstairs and fetched a few grooming items and brought them back down into the living room.
Now placed in front of her were 50 shades of nail polish. She usually wore the more neutral colors but felt like passing her time to paint her nails the human way. If she could remember. She usually painted her nails quickly with one color. She had the idea of painting a delicate detail on her nails. What it was she didn't know was the actual detail. Maybe it would come to her.
As she sat and pondered what to do she lowered the volume on the tv. She would let it be background noise. It had stopped on BBC and Robin Hood was on when she ran upstairs. Then another sound and beautiful scent entered within her range of senses.
"Alice come and help me to decide what to do?"She knew Alice would already know what she was talking about so didn't bother to explain.

Alice skipped down the stairs in a flash when she heard Esme call. A smile graced her lips as she appeared in the doorway. "This is going to be fun," she said before moving to sit on the floor next to the couch.
It had been a while since the two had found time to spend alone together. She felt bad about leaving Esme at home all the time since she had school but she knew her 'mom' found many things to do around town while her children and husband were at school and work, respectively.
"Now are we deciding your nails or what to watch because I think we can find something better," she said.

Esme couldn't hide the joy she found in Alice's whole being. She laughed and gave it a moment of thought. Which would she decide on the nails or finding something better to watch. To maximize their time together she decided that they could wait to watch a movie together. Maybe even Rosalie would show and make it a Cullen/Hale Girls' Night In. That would be lovely.
"I think if we figure out what we should do with our nails we can spend time on that project and then we can pick a movie to watch together." She said in her genuinely happy mother tone.
She knew that once a decision on design was made she would do Alice's nails as well. Alice didn't have to be the only one in the family who enjoyed playing dress up even if it was only for their nails.
"I was thinking on doing a little graphic that resembled the curves you see on lilies along the side of the nail in different shades. I can't seem to decide on what shades I should use or even if that is a good idea. What do you think, my Dear?"

"Oh that sounds perfect," Alice exclaimed grinning. "I have a few ideas for movies but let's talk nails first," she said with a nod and crossed her legs pretzel style before resting her elbows on her knees and placing her chin in her hands. She looked up at Esme and grinned.
"Lilies are always so beautiful," she commented as Esme began describing some of her ideas. Alice always got a kick out of it when her surrogate mother joined her in dress up moments.
"Well what color were you thinking for the nails? The design might look good in a lavander color," she suggested. She picked through a few bottles and held them up to the light, shaking them, before looking again and smiling. They were all so pretty.

Esme examined the different colors as Alice sat near her. There was a multitude of colors in front of them. The colors varied from pinks, purples, browns, metallics, whites and even blacks. As Alice stated lavender she had a brilliant idea. Us
"I think lavender would be a beautiful base coat then using this light pink intertwined with a white curve and a little bit of gold to accent it. What do you think? We can use more vibrant colors for your nails, if you'd like."She said in her usual soothing tone.
She picked up the colors as if to verify to herself that they would work well together. She also passed them by Alice to see them though she was sure she already knew what was going to be the final decision. She pictured it in her own mind and it seemed to work. The lavender wasn't too dark or too light a color thus the pink and white would be a perfect contrast. She wasn't sure about the gold but thought it could be nice to try.

Bottles were passed and Alice tilted her head, examining the colors. She really did love the lavender Esme had picked out. She sat pondering for a moment, trying to see what colors they would officially agree upon. It seemed they were a great pick.
"That sounds wonderful Esme," she said with a smile before handing them back. "I wouldn't mind having the same thing unless you can think of something else you would like to try."

Esme was so grateful for the life Carlisle had given them. She was going through the colors she had brought down once more. There was a pale almost neutral pink that she picked up and handed to Alice.
"This would make a lovely base color for your nails. We can do the same design with different colors for you. If you wish?" She then grabbed a bright not so neon pink, yellow and hmm...what to do for the accent color.
She perused over the bottles and couldn't decide on which color. "Alice, dear, these are some of the colors that just shout out to me for your nails and personality. What should the accent color be? If we are using different colors that is?" She asked thoroughly enjoying herself but puzzled for the moment.

"I think some form of nice cream color would work with that shade of pink," she said, tilting her head and studying the color she held in her hands. She looked at the yellow Esme picked out. "That would do lovely," she said smiling.
A grin fought it's way to Alice's face as Esme began picking more colors out, this time for Alice. She loved the look in Esme's eye when she was thinking about color schemes. She'd seen it enough times when some room in the house was being redone. Jasper always found it funny that the two girls loved decorating and dressing up so much.
Jasper. She hadn't seen him since the day of the car accident around Halloween. He'd simply left her a note that she kept currently in a drawer in their room, neatly folded. She knew the others probably wondered when Jasper would come back and tried not to bring him up but she'd just smile. He'd be back for her. She was sure of it.
All of this ran through her head in a moment before she drew herself back into the conversation with Esme. "Um. I'm not sure about an accent," she said, biting her lip and leaning forward to examine a few colors. "What looks good over a light pink? You already have white for yours."

Esme shook her head and laughed she looked up at Alice. "You know I hadn't thought to look at the colors I had already chosen. White would be a very good accent for the colors we've chosen for you."
It took her a moment as she looked into Alice's eyes to realize something was bothering her. She knew it had to be about Jasper. She had literally never known them to be apart in all the years they had been a family. The two came as a pair and had stayed that way. It had broken Esme's heart to see him go. He was as much her son as any of the others had become her children. She became alright with the whole matter as Alice said he would come back. Her faith in Alice's visions were great even when it came to the little things.
"Alice, Are you alright? I'm here if you want to talk."She said in her motherly tone with a small grin. She loved her daughter and wanted her to be comfortable.

The bottle of white was added to the line up of colors for Alice's nails. "Matching is always fun," she said with a smile.
Her smile dimmed slightly when Esme caught on to her slightly saddened mood. "I'm alright Esme," she promised, looking down at the colors again. "I just miss him is all." She looked back up at the other.
"I don't think it'll be too much longer though."
'I hope' she added silently to herself.

Esme was instantly on her feet and giving Alice a gentle hug and then back in her spot with a hand still on Alice's back. She heard the mumble that had been said.
"You know I have impeccable hearing. We all miss him. I'm so sorry that the situation is the way it is. Jasper never breaks his promises and you have seen him returning thus he will return for you. Your bond is too strong to stay away for too long. He looks over you with so much love in his eyes. When he returns things will be better and he will have grown stronger from this."
Esme knew Alice really didn't necessarily need to hear this but knew the thought counted. She took a deep breathe and gave Alice a motherly smile. She knew things would be set right again just not sure when.

Esme's warm reassurance made Alice smile softly at her 'mother'. "Thanks Esme," she said, grabbing the older woman's hand and squeezing it slightly before letting go. "I just can't wait for him to be back. We've never been apart since we met and it just feels...weird. I don't like it."
She looked almost as if she were pouting by this point and broke into a smile. "But like you said. I know he's coming back. I know it will be soon. So I'm okay with being a bit weirder than normal." An understatement on human terms most likely but it made Alice grin to think it.
"Now. About these colors. I think we should do you first."

"I don't think it feels normal when you are separated from your soul mate even if it is for a temporary period of time." Esme said with a reassuring smile.
"Alright back to some fun. I'll be right back." in the blink of a human eye Esme had gone upstairs to retrieve some papers. Before returning she made a quick sketch of what her ideas were for herself and Alice in colored pencil. She showed them to Alice upon arriving back to the couch. "This is what I had in mind for us. Nothing too fancy but very delicate and girlie. I trust you can do this in your sleep so have at it." She placed the nail polish infront of Alice and placed her hands in the general position unlike humans they could hold absolutely still.

Esme's reassurances caused Alice to smile. The woman certainly knew what to say to make someone feel better. "Thanks," she said before Esme ran upstairs.
When her fellow vampire returned she eyed the sketch before placing it on the floor next to the bottles they had chosen. "With pleasure," she said, grinning and twisted open a bottle.
It didn't take long to copy the sketched pattern onto the still nails before her. It would take longer for them to dry that it did to apply all the colors. "There," she said, finishing Esme's pinky. "How does that look?"

Esme blew on her fingers gently to speed up the drying process. "They look beautiful. You truly have a gift for making things prettier than they already are." She continued to blow on her fingers until they were dry which didn't take too long though it was still longer than the process. She was pleased that the colors were bleeding into each other.
"Let me see your fingers it is your turn." Esme pulled out the pallet that they set aside for Alice. First she pulled out the sketch with Alice's colors. She held it up. "First things first is this what you want or shall we change it up?" She said cheerfully.
Esme was always glad to spend time with her children. She truly loved each and every one of them as if they were her own. Alice was her adorable one who had her own flavor of cuteness and toughness put together. Esme knew Alice could hold her own though that was usually mistaken by others by her seemingly fragile-like frame.
