Bella stifled a groan at the mention of Mike.
"Mike's a good guy, if a little imposing. He actually came by here the other day...almost got hit square in the face with my shoe," she said, trying hard not to laugh at the memory.
"Anyways, he wanted to do something over the weekend and I told him that I already had plans to stay the weekend with you," she said with a shrug.
She reached over to the coffee table where she kept a mug full of M&M's, and popped a couple into her mouth. She decided to leave out the fact that Jacob had come by the very next day. The less Alice knew, the less Edward knew. And the less Edward knew, the less tension there was between Edward and Jacob.

"Oh you did, did you?" Alice said grinning. "I thought you said something about rather going to biology on blood test days than spending the weekend with me and my shopping spree impulses?" she teased, watching Bella as she grabbed some M&Ms.
The shrug Bella had given her intrigued Alice. Nothing was ever simple with Bella yet she tried to make it sound as if it had been no big deal when Alice knew how annoying the Newton child could be. She didn't say anything however, not really wanting to know if the girl didn't want to tell her. It was probably something that would bother Edward so she didn't want to know if that were the case.

She was glad that Alice didn't seem to be pushing the issue. She had only mentioned it for the simple fact that she had brought Mike up first. Bella wished that there was a way for them to have a 'normal girl talk' but there was always that risk that Edward might accidentally hear something in Alice's head. It made things quite difficult and they had to skirt around some issues and avoid others totally. There were just some things that girl didn't want her boyfriend (or brother in Alice's case) to hear.
"I just figured that we could somehow manage a weekend without shopping sprees," she said with a laugh.

"That or you actually wanted to hang out with my dear brother," Alice shot back.
After a moment, she reached over and rested a hand on Bella's head lightly, looking thoughtful. "I'm so glad you two found each other."

Bella smiled sadly at Alice's comment.
"Yeah, I'm glad we found each other, too," she whispered. What she couldn't understand is why Edward didn't want her to turn. Sure, it would be painful, sure there was a possibility that she could be dangerous for a while -- but they could go away to some desolate place until she got that under control. What mattered to her was that she got to spend eternity with him.
"I just don't under..." she began, but stood up suddenly and made her way to the kitchen. She choked on a sob as she pulled a glass from the cabinet and the glass fell to the floor with a loud crash!

Concern flooded Alice's face as Bella quickly got up and rushed out of the room. What didn't she understand?
The sound of a sob floated in the air and had Alice up even before the glass crashed to the floor. Racing into the kitchen she was careful of the glass and picked Bella up, sitting her on the counter. She held her breathe in case her friend had cut herself by the accident and worriedly looked at her. "Bella are you alright?"

"I'm fine," she said, wiping her hand across her face to dry her tears, not noticing the gash on the palm of her hand. She rested her forehead against Alice's for a moment and whispered, "I'm fine," as if trying to reassure herself.
Then it hit her. The copper-y smell of blood. Looking down, she saw that she had cut her hand -- badly. "I just don't understand why Edward won't.." she said, her eyes growing wider as she took in the sight of her bloody hand. Her breaths began coming in short, shallow bursts as she started to hyperventilate. She tried to finish her sentence again, but her eyes rolled to the back of her head and she hit her head on the cabinet.

A statue couldn't have held more still than Alice did as Bella rested her forehead on her's. The smell of blood wafted towards her and she took a deep breathe through her mouth and held it, watching as Bella started to talk about Edward again.
Her friend's breath's suddenly became panicked and shallow and Alice realized Bella had seen the cut on her hand and was hyperventilating. Next thing she knew her friend's chocolate eyes rolled back and she smacked her head on a cabinet, collapsing.
In the blink of an eye Alice scooped up the unconscious girl and raced to lay her on the bathroom floor. She laid her on the small rug in the bathroom and grabbed a towel, balling it up as a pillow and disappeared for a moment to grab something to use on her hand.
Taking a cloth she wet it and quickly applied pressure to Bella's hand, working on stopping the bleeding. "Bella. Bella please wake up," she said lightly placing her hand on the girl's face while keeping the other on the cut.
She already knew where the antiseptic and such were from previous visits and planned to get them as soon as her patient was conscious. "Bella hon," she called again, worry filling her voice as it rang out in the bathroom.

"Bella. Bella please wake up."
Who is that? Alice, you're too loud, you're killing my head! And, oh! Why does that hurt so much? Why is there pressure on my hand? Ouch! Gosh, Alice, don't you understand that that hurts? Stop that.
"Bella hon."
Okay, you're really not helping the ringing in my ears or the pounding in my head. And what is wrong with my hand? Let go! That's better. Now, maybe, I can rest.
Bella lay unconscious on the bathroom floor, the better part of oblivious to what had happened. The bleeding in her hand had slowed, but not completely stopped. The wound would probably need stitches at some point, but for now she was comfortable.

"Bella," she called once more before letting out a small annoyed growl that was so tiny it almost wasn't heard. Deciding it would be okay to leave the unconscious brunette for the few seconds it would take to grab the medical supplies she turned around and went through the cabinets pulling out an assortment of products before sitting cross-legged on the floor next to the girl and picking up her hand once more.
Alice spared a weary glance at Bella before muttering, "This is going to hurt probably if you're conscious at all." The next second she was pouring a liquid onto a clean cotton swab and started to brush along the sides of the cut. "Sorry if it hurts." On closer inspection she decided there was no glass in the cut thankfully.

"Sorry if it hurts."
The first thing that registered in Bella's mind was the fact that her hand was cold. First from Alice's own cold hand and then from whatever it was that she was putting on it. That was quickly followed by a sharp stinging sensation.
Gah! That hurts, she thought as her eyebrows involuntarily pulled together because of the pain.

The control it took to be careful and soft with Bella's hand took most of her concentration but Alice quickly observed the frown etched in Bella's brows. Quickly but just as carefully she finished cleaning out the cut and tossed the swabs into the trashcan behind her.
She continued to work on Bella's hand, laying a clean strip of gauze over it and wrapping it before tapping it in place. Alice reached a hand up and smoothed Bella's brow.
"Bella dear," she said, stroking the girl's forehead. "We're all done."
She carefully picked her up and brought her to her bed, laying her down. She brushed some hair out of her face and rested a blanket lightly over her. "I'll be right back," she said before exiting the room.
Returning to the bathroom she put the supplies away before scampering to the kitchen to clean up the spilled glass. It only took a few minutes to get each and every piece up and dispose of them properly. As soon as she saw that the room was fit she made her way upstairs again.
Biting her lip Alice debated whether to call Edward or not. Perhaps Carlisle would be a better choice. However knowing that Edward would be furious no matter what she quickly flipped open her phone and hit speed dial to call her brother.

When Alice hung up the phone from calling her brother she quickly switched to calling Carlisle. His cell was the best bet at the moment so she tried it first. As it rang she moved over towards her friend and her shoulders sagged slightly.
She reached out and brushed some hair out of her younger girl's face before turning her attention back to the phone.

Carlisle's head was orderly going through the absolute worst case scenarios. He had to, as a Doctor. The rudimentary medkit sat on the passenger seat. He began murmuring to himself "She could go into shock, she could have split a vein." 99% of all of these were, of course, impossible from what Alice had described.
He faintly resisted the urge to step on the gas and power through traffic, but he ignored the stop signs and red lights, driving at a comfortable 50 mph. The Doctor arrived at Bella's house only 10 or so minutes after first getting Alice's call, and he quickly grasped the first-aid kit and jogged hurriedly inside, knocking and entering in one graceful motion. "Alice! Bella!" He shouted, looking around for them.

Bella groaned softly, her comfortable state being interrupted by a soft murmuring. Alice. On the phone with Edward. Then on the phone with Carlisle. Carlisle yelling. She groaned again and pulled a pillow over her head and rolling over, trying to get back to her unconscious state.
Pain. Stabbing pain. That was all she felt. Her hand felt like a knife was going through it and her head was pounding. Groaning again, she figured she must have fallen again and tried to block everything out as she slipped back into darkness.
